Oona Grimes
Bricolage
6th July - 31st July, 2011
Grimes fantastical bande dessinée bricolage deals with text in its various formats of myth, gossip, news stories and fictional verse, skewering the linear narrative, as a disruption rather than a continuation of the literal reading.
Having previously collaborated with writers and poets, most recently with Iain Sinclair and Fabian Peake, Oona Grimes plundered the Poetry Library's collection, to develop a fictitious correspondence between Edith Sitwell and Bob Cobbings. Edith mixes concrete is a visual dialogue between two poets from different periods and class backgrounds, exhibited as a series of postcards and artist’s book.
Playing the role of messenger, Grimes initially considers Sitwell and Cobbing's poetry in relation to the other, to pick up on mutual themes or common words. But through the mistranslation and apophenia of quotations out of context, she develops an oblique connection between image and text. Each fictional exchange takes the form of a triptych, one postcard belonging to each poet and the third being a fusion of the two. Grimes’ use of unconventional material such as letraset and letratape, leftover scraps of vinyl, fuzzy foam and metallic plastic, reconstructs Sitwell's and Cobbings' experimental approach to poetry.
Oona Grimes is currently Visiting Lecturer at London University of the Arts, Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford University and the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Her works are in collections of the V&A, Manchester Metropolitan, University College London Strang Collection, College Oxford University and the New York Public Library. Grimes exhibits in the U.S and Japan, amongst other countries. She is represented by Danielle Arnaud Contemporary Art.
The exhibition continues in the Southbank Centre Members Bar on Level 6 of the Royal Festival Hall.
