Time-lapse animation
1 June - 3 July, 2011
Meghana Bisineer's drawing practice and manipulation of material has led to a unique series of animation exercises, captured as time-lapse videos. Art on Poetry’s resident artist immersed herself in the Library's poetry collection to focus on the act of diving as a reference to the close proximity of the River Thames. Drawing directly onto the windows, Bisineer moves beyond the confines of the Library towards the Southbank Centre’s backdrop as the medium of her ongoing work.
Dog (2009), a video installation completed at a residency in New Delhi, is the instigating piece of Bisineer's exploration into stop-frame animation. An electric fan leafs through the pages of a phone directory whilst the repetitive act of a dog diving is projected onto the turning pages. The motorised installation fuels the narrative's speed and fluidity as the circular video loop emphasises the incessant, ritual gestures of Bisineer's drawing.
In Always for the first time (2010) restraint performs an integral role. Lacking a work space at the time, Bisineer turned to her bedroom window as a replacement for her studio wall. The glass acts as a transparent canvas to enable Bisineer to work with the interplay of changing light and skyline. The animation leads you on a pulsating journey; dripping ink is transformed into a flock of birds enhanced by the sampling of a flapping sail as part of a sound design by Tom Simmons.
Window Study (2011) is a time-lapse video loop in collaboration with Michaela Nettlell, created on the window of a seventh floor studio. As a study of the movement of water, the glass mediates between the projected shoreline and London’s cityscape. Shot from two camera angles and viewed as a split-screen, the videos move in and out of sync, mirroring the visual rhythm of the lapping waves.
Bisineer's residency time lapse film opens to sinewy figures darting beyond the pages of a sketch book towards the Southbank Centre’s cityscape. Handwritten messages painted onto the window as long quotations from TS Elliot’s Wasteland, form and erase to the tempo of a sewing machine. As day turns to night, the artist’s figure appears in silhouette, touching on Anthony Gormley’s life size casts installed on the roofs of the Southbank Centre in 2007. Bisineers’ animations and book arts rely on the artist’s hand which remains integral to the creative process. The film is accompanied by Bisineer’s artist’s book, in collaboration with Akhila Krishnan, as digital stills overlaid between tracing paper and carefully hand bound by Coptic stitching.
Meg Bisineer graduated in 2006 from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Animation. She has since completed residencies and held teaching positions in London, New Delhi and Bangkok. Her animation has been commissioned for Amnesty International, Channel 4 and MTV Europe amongst others. Bisineer was awarded the first place in Man Drawing Prize in 2006 and the Audience Award in the International Festival of Cinema and Technology in 2008.
Prompted by the Festival of Britain celebrations, Art on Poetry is a dedicated season of artists' books at the Saison Poetry Library. Twelve internationally acclaimed artists are given a rare opportunity to draw upon Southbank Centre's archives and re-consider British identity sixty years on.
The Saison Poetry Library is situated on the fifth level of the Royal Festival Hall and open from Tuesday to Sunday, 11am - 8pm.
